Katy Perry, Jonas Brothers And Beyoncé: 5 Important Moves On This Week’s Hot 100 - Forbes

Posted: 30 May 2020 08:45 AM PDT

Two musicians own at least 10% of the Hot 100 this week, something that remains a relatively uncommon accomplishment for any musician, let alone two at the same time. Interestingly, while they both land double digit placements on the all-genre tally, they only count one top 10 hit between them and just a handful of top 40s.

Here's a look at five of the most important moves on this week's Hot 100 singles chart.

No. 1 - Megan Thee Stallion - "Savage (ft. Beyoncé)"

Several weeks ago, Beyoncé hopped on a remixed version of Megan Thee Stallion's hit single "Savage" in an attempt to push the track to the top of the Hot 100. Sadly, it was beaten to the peak position two frames in a row, first by Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj's "Say So" and then by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber's "Stuck With U." Only now, after both of those tunes have had a turn on the throne and stepped down, can the powerful pairing of Stallion and Queen Bey rule

"Savage" is Stallion's first leader on the Hot 100 and Bey's eleventh.

No. 6 - Future - "Life Is Good (ft. Drake)"

Back inside the top 10 this week is "Life Is Good" by Future and Drake, which serves as the lead single off of the former's new album High Off Life. As that title claims the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, 13 songs from the set find their way to the Hot 100, with the Drake collaboration leading the charge.

No. 30 - Polo G - "Flex (ft. Juice WRLD)"

While Future may rule the Billboard 200 and claim 13 positions on the Hot 100, Polo G doesn't fall far behind, making this a huge week for hip-hop on both tallies. The rapper, who almost snagged his first No. 1 album, but whose new set The Goat settles for second place instead, currently has 10 songs charting on the all-genre singles ranking, a career best showing for him. The highest-ranking among them is his collaboration with late rapper Juice WRLD, "Flex," which begins at No. 30.

No. 33 - Jonas Brothers - "X (ft. Karol G)"

It's been almost a year since the Jonas Brothers officially returned with their comeback album Happiness Begins, which went to the top of the Billboard 200 and produced their first No. 1 hit on the Hot 100, "Sucker." The trio has been very busy since then, and already in 2020 they've shared three new singles, none of which have been connected to any full-lengths. "X," a collaboration with Latin star Karol G, was packaged with "Five More Minutes" as a double single, and now it's reached the all-genre chart.

"X" is the fifteenth top 40 hit for the Jonas Brothers and the second for G.

No. 40 - Katy Perry - "Daisies"

Despite the fact that she released a slew of songs throughout 2019 (some of which performed well, while others didn't even reach the Hot 100), Katy Perry has delivered what she is calling the first proper single from her upcoming album, which should arrive later this year. "Daisies" opens at No. 40, barely breaking into the important region on the list. By doing so, the cut has become her twenty-fifth top 40 on the Hot 100.

'I really can't believe it, because being from Houston Beyoncé is just Queen. That's all you know. There's no debate, there's nothing else to say - who's better than Beyoncé?'

The Times Beyonce Showed Us It's Her World And We Just Live In It

The 100 greatest UK No 1s: No 16, Beyoncé – Crazy in Love - The Guardian

Posted: 15 May 2020 08:40 AM PDT

Crazy in Love rewrote pop history the moment it landed. Beyoncé's 2003 smash hit is widely considered her debut solo single – eclipsing its largely forgotten predecessor, Work It Out, released a year earlier on the soundtrack to Austin Powers: Goldmember. After Beyoncé had affirmed her talents with Destiny's Child as the R&B group's lead and dabbled in acting (a role in Goldmember and musical Carmen: A Hip Hopera), few doubted she had the goods to go it alone; if anything, the stakes were sky high.

If we set aside our collective amnesia and recall Beyoncé's pre-demigod status, she wasn't unanimously liked. Her drive, perfectionism and near birth-right stardom was read as ego. Her solo bid came in the wake of Destiny's Child's controversial personnel shuffles and departures. It wasn't long before the press blamed Beyoncé – the golden girl whose father managed the band and whose mother dressed them, saving the most stylish iterations of their matching outfits for her daughter. The media stoked a battle of the bandmates; when Kelly Rowland stepped out to team up with rapper Nelly on 2002 R&B hit Dilemma, the release of Beyoncé's first solo album was delayed.

Crazy in Love confirmed that we were to believe the hype. The announcement of her arrival via those unforgettable blaring horns, sampled from the Chi-Lites' 1970 hit, Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So), erred on regal fanfare, inspiring endless struts across makeshift dancefloors-turned-catwalks to this day. Even the video plays out like a one-woman variety show in which she gives all she's got, putting on an all-singing, all-gyrating pop-goddess performance complete with six outfit changes, each more grandiose than the last. Beyoncé was auditioning for the part of pop's new reigning diva, a role she knew she had already secured.

Beyoncé: Crazy in Love ft Jay-Z – video

Its creation involved more serendipity than the slick execution expected from anything usually helmed by Beyoncé. The day the song's producer, Rich Harrison, was due to play her the demo, he was hungover from prematurely celebrating its success. Beyoncé wasn't keen on what she heard but gave him two hours to finish writing it while she went out. The chorus came from Beyoncé catching her dishevelled reflection in the mirror and remarking that she was "looking so crazy right now" and the famous "uh-oh uh-oh" hook was improvised. Even the inclusion of her then boyfriend, now husband, Jay-Z, was last-minute addition: "I asked Jay to get on the song the night before I had to turn my album in," Beyoncé told Entertainment Weekly. "Thank God he did.".

The mystery surrounding their relationship status added another dimension – they had secretly been together for at least three years, though their duet on Jay's '03 Bonnie & Clyde, from 2002, had stoked the speculation.

When Crazy in Love was released in May 2003, Beyoncé became the first female artist (and fifth artist ever) to top the singles and albums charts simultaneously in the US and the UK. In 2018, Rolling Stone named the track the greatest song of the 21st century. It is timeless, covered across the years by indie bands, orchestras and even as a 1940s-style swing number. The most famous redux was, in true Beyoncé fashion, by Beyoncé herself: a sultry, slowed-down remix for the 2014 film 50 Shades of Grey. While rappers are well-known for hyperbole, it was no exaggeration when Jay-Z declared Crazy in Love "history in the making".
