I first heard of this from a couple of online forums, such as makeupalley and flowerpod. Everybody was saying that it is cheap and good, so I thought I just had to get my hands on it.
Fate has it that slightly more than three years ago, I had the chance to go to Beijing, and I saw this bottle standing there, on the counter behind the salesperson, and I thought,
"It's so cheap, I am going to try my luck. If this is real, you've earned a big deal. If this is a counterfeit, then take it as a lesson learnt."
So I paid the money, and the rest is history.
(Don't blame me for being suspicious. I got cheated when I bought OPIs. I tested and made sure the colours I wanted has balls in them, but when I got home, out of the four bottles the salesperson put in my plastic bag, two had no balls, and applied terribly. The counterfeits are so horrid that I can't use them. I tried to google for the name on the sticker, OPI does not even have such a colour! It was a dreadful experience. It always is when you get scammed in a foreign country.)
Thayer's Alcohol-free Toner - Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera
Available: iHerb.com (there are sprees organised if you join forums). I bought mine in Beijing.
Volume: 355 ml (it's a lot!)
Star Properties: Gentle, moisturises, vitamin E.
Packaging
It's a pretty standard clear colourless plastic bottle with a screw cap that you can open to dispense. It is huge, the biggest bottle of toner that I have ever used.
The con is that it is hard to use the toner straight from this huge bottle.
But the pro, of course, is that the large volume makes this really good value for money.
As usual, I also enjoy being able to see fully how much product I have left. And I think it is genius of Thayers to print the description and ingredients on the back of that front piece of sticker, so that they don't have to stick another huge sticker on the back of the bottle.
Back of bottle - completely see-through. |
Basically, this is saying that Thayers has a rich history, and that this toner is a blend of rose petal water, witch hazel, aloe vera, and vitamin E.
It emphasises that the witch hazel used is not distilled, and so maintaining all the natural benefits of the tannins. Witch hazel is really important in a toner because it tightens pores and smoothen skin without drying skin. (ICM has witch hazel with rose water toner too. I am not sure how well that works, but the ICM pure rose water did not quite work for me.)
It is also alcohol-free, paraben-free, propylene glycol-free, moisturises and cleanses.
Ingredients
While the first ingredient is not rose water (maybe that's why it does not look as pink as my ICM pure rose water), it is still something awesome!
We have aloe vera, glycerin, fragrance, un-distilled witch hazel, rose water, citric acid, grapefruit extract, and vitamin E.
I really like that I can read the names of each ingredient properly, and they are not suspicious chemicals.
How I Use This
I like using toner in small bottles, so I basically transfer some into many different bottles. This is because I like to put one in the bathroom, where I use after washing face each day, and I like to have one in my handbag, where I use on a hot day to refresh myself. I also like to have another bottle on my study/laptop table, so I can refresh myself after a while of computer.
It is very easy to transfer the toner. Just unscrew the caps on both bottles, and pour. The mouth is small enough so you don't spill toner all over.
I got the spritzer bottles from MUJI, Daiso, and the purple one is recycled from my Ole Henriksen Cucumber Toner, from left to right respectively.
The Product
The product itself smells amazing. If you like the smell of rose, this one has it. It makes me feel great just putting toner on my face. The toner liquid feels like water, which is great, because toners are usually supposed to feel like water.
Effectiveness
Good. I wouldn't say that this is superb, but I do find that it has some effect on my face, unlike the pure rose water from ICM. It helps to prevent breakouts. With the ICM pure rose water, I find that I somehow get more pimples.
I suppose this is what people mean by "the effect of witch hazel". They say witch hazel helps ease breakouts, and prevent them.
As for moisturising and cleansing, I don't see much difference on my face. No visible effect.
Of all the toners that I have used before, I think the Nuxe Rosewater one is still the most effective in that it really smoothens and moisturises my skin.
In terms of cleansing effect, I think the DeCosmet one that I get from a private beautician, is better.
Price
Fantastic! It is always good when you can get effective products at large volume at low cost.
I think this has really made me change my mind about rose water not being useful as a toner at all. The ICM one disappointed me, but now, I think it could be because I didn't buy the one with witch hazel. I am inclined to test the ICM Witch Hazel with Rose Water if I spot it on the shelves in future.
Good enough. 4/5.
Price-wise, this is the best that I've used. But if money is a concern, then I'd recommend Nuxe 3 Roses Toning Lotion. This is especially since you have to pay for shipping to get Thayer's rose water, but Nuxe is available at all Watsons in Singapore.
That said, don't forget to look out for iHerb sprees online, and jump on to save on shipping, if you want to try this.
