Pretty In Pink: The Leibish Pink Promise Diamond

The Leibish Pink Promise is a rare fancy vivid purplish-pink diamond weighing 2.02 carats.  Leibish & Co. presented the diamond at the 2013 Hong Kong International Jewellery Show which began March 5.
The majority of the world's pink diamonds, over 90%, are found at Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia.  The Leibish Pink Promise, however, was discoverd at the Kao mine in South Africa.  Pink diamonds of this size and color are exceptionally rare and its South African origin is especially unique.

The color is another factor that makes the diamond even rarer.  Leibish & Co. says, "the diamond is of the finest bubble gum color, with some fresh reddish flashes."  While pink diamonds are rare and sell at auctions at astounding rates, the purplish-pink hue is the rarest.

The company spent three months assessing, cutting and polishing the 4.96 carat rough diamond.  Round and heart shaped cuts were considered but eventually it was decided that a cushion-cut provided the best yield.

Sotheby's sold this .51 carat fancy purplish-pink diamond in February for $338,000.  The Leibish Pink Promise is expected to bring a hefty price, too.
