We're actually not going to bust this myth. We're just going to qualify it: Platinum jewelry can last forever with proper care.
Platinum is heavier and stronger than the other precious metals. It is more malleable as well. These two qualities make it a good choice for securing a diamond or precious gemstone. Its rich, white luster complements diamonds and other precious gemstones while its neutral color enhances a stone's brilliance and depth. It is hypoallergenic which makes it wonderful for people with sensitive skin. Platinum makes an exceptional choice for jewelry that will be passed down generation to generation.
However, to insure that platinum jewelry lasts forever proper care and maintenance is required.
- All precious metals age with daily wear. Platinum is unique in that the metal is only displaced, not lost. Over time, platinum develops a rich finish, called a patina, but it doesn’t wear away. Many people like the patina sheen which has a satiny look. But if you prefer a high polish you can have your platinum jewelry polished to maintain a bright shine.
- All precious metals scratch, and platinum is no exception. Store pieces separately, in a jewelry box or cloth pouch so they don’t get scratched by other items.
- Remove your platinum jewelry when undertaking heavy work or participating in sports. It is also advisable not to handle bleach or harsh chemicals when wearing your jewelry. Although they won’t hurt the platinum, chemicals may discolor diamonds or gemstones.
- Platinum jewelry should be cleaned the same way you clean other fine jewelry. Use jewelry cleaner or have it professionally cleaned by your jeweler. Your jeweler should also give your platinum jewelry a semi-annual inspection for wear and tear.
